Match Report: Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 PSG

Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

A third defeat in a row for Paris Saint-Germain as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat away in Austria against Red Bull Salzburg on Thursday night.

Goals from Jakob Jantscher and Dusan Svento sent the Red Bull Arena into raptures in yet another frustrating evening for the French.

Qualification to the knockout stages of the Europa League are no longer in their hands when they host an already qualified Athletic Bilbao in two weeks at the Parc des Princes.

The first-half entailed of frenetic action with both teams creating a variety of opportunities. However, it was the hosts who took the initiative thanks to Jantscher in the 20th minute who was completely unmarked at the back post to tuck home Christoph Leitgeb’s delicate ball from the right.

PSG responded well as they sought after an equaliser. Mevlut Erding, who came into the fold in place of Kevin Gameiro, shot wide on a number of occasions and Brazilian Nene brought out a sterling save from Alexander Walke.

Jean Christophe-Bahebeck came on for the hosts after the interval and demonstrated his capabilities. Both he and Nene came agonisingly close to levelling matters but with PSG chasing the game, their fate was sealed in the 94th minute as Svento smashed the ball on the volley inside the penalty area giving Nicolas Douchez no chance.

Although a host of big names were missing, the disappointment at Camp des Loges will continue in the run-up to the game against Auxerre on Sunday evening. Coach Antoine Kombouare needs to get a response from his players to end this rut and get things back on track.

PSG team that faced Red Bull Salzburg; Nicolas Douchez, Christophe Jallet, Zoumana Camara, Siaka Tiene, Ceara, Milan Bisevac, Mathieu Bodmer, Mohamed Sissoko, Nene, Clement Chantome, Mevlut Erding.
