Last night’s demolition of Dynamo Kiev was a real statement of intent for Paris Saint-Germain. The return to the Champions League after eight long years was worth the wait and the team did not let the Parisien faithful down.
The Parc des Princes was rocking right from the get go and those in attendance were treated to one of the finest PSG performances in recent years – certainly the best since Carlo Ancelotti took over last December.
He gave his thoughts following the final whistle. Although he was delighted with the display he is under no illusion that there is still plenty of work to do before qualification is sealed. He said; “We played very well. It was very important for the confidence to win this first match of the Champions League. The atmosphere in the Parc was fantastic, because the club has been waiting for this moment for eight long years. We now have five more matches in the group stage. We have started well but we only have three points, not more. Now we have to turn our attentions to our next match, against Bastia, this Saturday, to continue our current good form.”
Scorer of the opening goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic gave his assessment by saying; “We played well and it was tough for Dynamo. It’s a great start and an excellent result. It is very positive for the club after an eight year absence from this competition. The rhythm wasn’t quite as high in the second half, but over 90 minutes, we played very well.”
Finally, the chairman of the club Nasser Al-Khelaifi described the evening as ‘beautiful’ and thoroughly enjoyed his evening; “It’s a good way to start the Champions League. It was a great win and hearing the Champions League music at the Parc des Princes was a beautiful moment. We are all very happy this evening. After eight years, getting back into the UCL was very difficult and it was very important to win this evening. The entire team was perfect this evening.”
