FC Girondins De Bordeaux 0-1 PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN
1970 PSG Man Of The Match: Zoumana Camara
Paris Saint-Germain are back at the top of Ligue 1 after a comfortable 1-0 victory away at the Stade Chaban Delmas thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first-half strike.
It is Les Parisiens first win in Bordeaux in eight years and it was a welcome one following the 0-0 draw with Ajaccio last weekend.
But, what was really admirable was the courage of the players to put on a professional performance after a traumatic few days. The death of Nick Broad hit the club hard and no more so than Carlo Ancelotti who was visibly emotional during the minute silence prior to the kick-off. The club showed its unity as the players and staff all huddled as one in the dug-out. They are grieving and yet had the heart to do their job. Professionals or not, a truly wonderful display of solidarity from all those involved who have lost a friend – not a colleague – a friend.
With Thiago Silva and Alex out injured, an old centre-back pairing reunited. Mamadou Sakho and Zoumana Camara partnered each other once again and put in a real accomplished shift. Camara especially had a terrific game, was never caught out of position and made a number of vital blocks.
Javier Pastore was dropped to the bench as Jeremy Menez came in to support Ibra up top. Lucas Moura played down the right for the opening quarter with Ezequiel Lavezzi on the left.
The first-half was pretty drab in truth. Lucas was moved centrally behind Zlatan as Menez moved out to the right. This brought out the best out of the Brazilian as he was able to weave into space and run at the defence. It was he who assisted the goal for Ibrahimovic on the stroke of half-time. He worked the space, driving forward, before delicately slipping the ball through for the Swede to hit hard and low in the box giving goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso no chance.
After the interval, PSG were more than comfortable. The shape of the team was good, the defence was not being exposed and we carried a threat on the counter-attack. In fact, it was a real surprise as to how much we quelled Bordeaux going forward. Salvatore Sirigu was never really tested, with exception to a long range effort from Henri Saivet.
We held on for a valuable victory without breaking a sweat and it takes us to the top of the table above Marseille on goal difference with 42 points. Toulouse are up next in the Coupe de France on Wednesday before a tasty affair with Lille on the Sunday.
There was a touching moment at the final whistle with Sakho pointing to the heavens in memory of Mr Broad. The win was for him and for him alone.
