The league title is well and truly in our grasp. If that was offered to us at the beginning of the season we would have snapped your hand off but this campaign could be doubly special with the capture of the Coupe de France.
A place in the last-four is more than obtainable as we travel to Evian tonight in the quarter-finals. It is the first of two meetings in quick succession as we travel back to the Parc des Sports in 11-days time in the league. Hopefully by that time we will be looking to make it two wins out of two against Les Roses.
We are coming up against a team that are loitering just outside the relegation places but their form coming into this has been pretty much spot on. They have just come off the back of beating Rennes 4-2 and prior to that they beat Lille at the Metropole. They even hammered Sochaux 5-1 at home the week before that. Their resurgence has been crucial in their scrap to avoid the drop and a prolonged cup run has also kept up the optimism in the camp.
In the cup they have yet to meet a top-flight team up until now; the champions-elect in fact. Two very good wins over Toulouse and Marseille in the classique has brought us to this dance and the motivation to win the club’s first ever double is more than enticing.
Carlo Ancelotti echoed that fact in yesterday’s presser with the final at the Stade de France very much in his sight next month; “Yes. I’m very excited by the idea of playing at the Stade de France. There are only two matches left before the final. Then we will have a good chance of winning the league-cup double. We will do our best to reach our goal, but it promises to be very difficult because the club has never done the double before”.
There is a real opportunity to create history here. Capturing a third league title is something that is going to be quite special but topping it off with a cup win at the Stade de France will be the cherry on top. We have a grand affiliation in the Coupe de France and it is tradition that I hope severs us well for the remainder of the season. The next six weeks could turn out to be a pretty special but Evian will do the utmost to be the party poopers tonight.
