Carlo Ancelotti dropped the bombshell last night to Canal+ as he admitted that he wanted to leave Paris Saint-Germain on the night where he was named Ligue 1 Coach Of The Year.

He did not go into the reasons why, 24-hours after the incredible scenes at the Parc des Princes but you would had to have lived in isolation for the last three months to not know the motive. It is no secret that Spanish stalwarts Real Madrid want him to replace Jose Mourinho at the end of the season. The club have already turned down an approach according to Nasser Al-Khelaifi and a second one has now been discarded once again.

Carlo made the admission on the set of Canal+ on the night of the UNFP awards. In front of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to name a few, the Italian simply said; “I want to leave”. It was an astonishing admission, to do it so publicly in front of his workforce. Asked what he would do if the club denied him to go he said; “The club will decide, we decide together. Because my intention is to leave”.

But the stance of the club is admirable, they value him too much to lose him and rightfully so. But the lure of Madrid is clearly a dream of Ancelotti. Al Khelaifi said yesterday in the midst of this; “We talked to him (Ancelotti). He has asked us to go to Real Madrid, but he still has a one-year contract. I told him that it was not possible for him to leave. I was very clear. I’m not angry but disappointed. I’ve always been very honest with him. We are very close to him since the day he arrived. But I still hope to change his mind.”

It was quite clear that this was going to come to ahead and it will be interesting to see what transpires. I just hope after a title winning season we are not left in a bitter dispute with the man who has given us so much in his 18-months in charge.

Strangely Carlo did also say; “This is not the right time to explain the reasons and maybe I will never explain why”. Interesting.
