After spending €79m this week on Edinson Cavani and Lucas Digne, Paris Saint-Germain will today complete the signing of centre-back Marquinhos for an eye watering fee of €35m.
The 19-year-old will complete his switch from Roma after arriving in the French capital yesterday. He will undergo a medical at Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract. No details as yet have been revealed by the club regarding a press conference.
It is another sign of investment in youth after the capture of Digne from Lille. It is a triumph for the football club to lure the Brazilian who is being tipped greatly to be one of the world’s best in his position in the coming seasons. He had a sterling debut campaign in European football in Italy last season with the Giallorossi and his performances attracted the interest from the likes of Barcelona. Roma will feel bitter losing their main starlet but the vastly lucrative offer from Les Parisiens was just too much to be sniffed out.
So what are we getting? One thing, a centre-back who has showed wisdom far beyond his years. His positional awareness as a defender is second to none and is intelligent enough to read the game to a tee. He is quick, can come across to the flanks to pressurise opposition players and is not shy of making a tackle. In many ways his attributes are similar to that of Thiago Silva who is going to help make him a better player. His Brazilian compatriot will play a big hand in his development as he did with Mamadou Sakho last season.
It is important that not too much pressure is put on the young lad’s shoulders despite the enormity of the transfer fee. He is going to go into the record books as the fourth most expensive defender in history, second highest for a teenager (Lucas Moura being the first) and the fifth in the club’s history. But it is blatantly obvious why PSG have poured so much money into this transfer. The club can help nurture him into one of the world’s best and with an education being given by Thiago Silva, the young man – along with his new employers – will reap the benefits.
The most striking characteristic for me already is his humility. He paid a lovely touch to the club he is departing yesterday by posting the following on his Twitter account; “Thanks to all of you, the fans, the club, my team-mates. Go Roma, go forever and always. I will never forget what I’ve experienced at Roma. It was a joy for me and I will always carry you in my heart.”
