Evian Thonon-Gaillard vs Paris Saint-Germain
It has been a strange week. Mixed emotions really for anyone affiliated with the club. Getting that first win of the season last weekend against Bastia at the Parc was cause for celebration. Lucas Moura and Edinson Cavani who have been out of form getting on the scoresheet was a sight for sore eyes. Even seeing little Claude Makelele return as coach in his suit and trainers was lovely to see. But of course this whole week has been dominated by the disgusting act of violence on Thiago Motta by Brandao.
The Brazilian has been banned until the 18th September where the LFP will make a definitive decision on his punishment. As I said in my brief assessment yesterday, I don’t think he should play on a football pitch again. Anyway, the less we talk about him the better, we have a game tonight against rock-bottom Evian.
The men in pink had a weekend to forget as they were smashed 6-2 away to Rennes that included some of the most absurd defending you will see all season. The capitulation of the team after Mexer put Les Rouges et Noirs 2-1 ahead was frightening for coach Pascal Dupraz who joked that his team could concede 12 against us at this rate after already shipping nine goals – three coming from promoted Caen on the opening day.
We are certainly expected to win tonight, there is no doubt about. But lest we forget that it was ETG who inflicted our first defeat last season in a 2-0 win on a chilly December night. That defeat ended 36 games unbeaten don’t forget so stranger things have happened.
But, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic back in Sweden to rehabilitee his hip injury, Thiago Silva out for the next few weeks and Gregory Van der Wiel also in a fresh injury set-back, Monsieur Blanc will have to make a few key changes. The most obvious of course is continuing Cavani as the central striker. Serge Aurier will come in for VDW at right-back as David Luiz continues his centre-back pairing with Marquinhos.
One man who is in the squad is Motta. It takes more than a head-butt and a broken nose to put that stalwart down. Team Motta!
