It is no secret that Paris Saint-Germain are preparing for the eventual departure of Ezequiel Lavezzi. Whether or not that happens this month? Well it remains to be seen. But he will almost for certain be playing his football elsewhere next season. With a move to Internazionale looking all the more likely, the champions are courting a number of wingers as a replacement. The latest to be linked is PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay.
The young Dutchman is being seriously courted by Manchester United. Manager Louis Van Gaal coached the player during his time as coach of the Dutch national team and would love to lure him to Old Trafford. Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton are two other clubs that have made apparent interest. Saints boss Ronald Koeman publically spoke about his club’s enquiries for the player but revealed that he wanted to stay in the Netherlands. According to Foot Mercato, Tottenham had a €20m scoffed out by the Dutch league leaders last summer.
Le Parisien have linked us with the 20-year-old this morning. Of course, any deal we negotiate will need to comply with the FFP sanctions that were handed to us by UEFA – thus making any deal in January unlikely (unless something develops with Lavezzi). Nevertheless, the player wants to win a league title with the red and whites before he leaves.
Coach Phillip Cocu has said he already expects him to leave at some point. He told Helden; “Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that but it’s okay. It’s great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he’s ready for a bigger step. That’s great”.
Depay certainly fits the profile in the type of player we need. He is nine years younger than Lavezzi with bag loads of potential. However, with some of Europe’s top clubs also taking interest it will be difficult to prize him to the Parc des Princes. Man United are already a step ahead you feel with the Van Gaal connection.
