The game tonight between PSG and Monaco will be broadcasted in over 70 countries. It clearly emphasises the interest in the match from afar and no doubt the results in Europe for both sides in the past two weeks will have generated this even more.
Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim compared the meeting to a Champions League game in his pre-match presser. The Portuguese tactician said; “Playing against Paris Saint-Germain is like playing a Champions League game! My players are very motivated”.
Les Parisiens’ coach Laurent Blanc had his say too as he exclaimed about French clubs currently doing better in Europe against English opposition. Premier League clubs have been dominant in the Champions League in the past decade with their sides regularly reaching the latter stages of the competition but PSG and Monaco made a statement of intent with their performances against Chelsea and Arsenal. Blanc said; “Judging by the recent Champions League matches between Paris and Chelsea and Arsenal vs Monaco, you’d have to say that French teams are doing better than English sides, while everyone said we were going to struggle. It may be a different story in the return legs, but for the moment, it’s the English club’s that have struggled. Analysing the two championships is a different argument, but over these two matches, we were better than them. That’s good for the French league. In Ligue 1, there are quality teams, quality players and quality coaches. We have to be conscious of that and not always thinking that the grass is greener elsewhere”
PSG will be back in the Champions League next season but Les Rouges et Blancs have some work to do if they want to be back dining at Europe’s top table. They are seven points off third but do have two games in hand, including tonight.
