Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu may be set to end his four years in Paris by completing a move back home to Italy.
According to L’Equipe, AS Roma have tabled an €11m bid for the 28-year-old with Spanish club Valencia also closely monitoring the situation. The sports daily also stated that the arrival of Kevin Trapp has angered SS and has informed the club via his representatives that he wants a transfer.
The Trapp signing has indeed cast major doubt over his future and with Nicolas Douchez recently signing a new contract, his role as number two would look to be consolidated.
Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi gave a glowing appraisal to the new German arrival Trapp via the club’s official site. It is the sort of appraisal that does not indicate that the new man will be a bit-part player. Nasser exclaimed; “We are sure that his qualities will strengthen the Club. I had many exchanges regarding Kevin in the last weeks with our sport management. He is known to be a very complete goalkeeper who is very strong in the air and who has excellent reflexes on the goal line. He has shown in the German League very strong mental qualities. For sure, our fans will love him”.
He also paid tribute to Sirigu whilst indicating that strength in depth was needed to give him competition. He said; “Salvatore is a very good goalkeeper. I don’t forget that, in 2011, he was one of the first players to join us and to believe in our project. He helped us to build quickly a very competitive team with whom he won three titles in Ligue 1 and several other trophies. But if we want to compete for a place on top of European football we must have more than one strong player for each key position. As you know, it is the case in several big European clubs. Salvatore is aware of this context”.
It does seem as if Sirigu’s days are numbered but if he is to depart, his role in the progress of the club should not be understated. He’s been one of the finest goalkeepers France where he boasts two Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year awards.
