Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos and the FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo will be paying us a visit in a double bill this autumn! The group stage of the UEFA Champions League spruced up some exhilarating clashes, no more so than Real Madrid coming up against Les Parisiens.
Los Blancos who were in pot two were pulled out of the hat by former Barcelona player Juliano Belletti which got those in the auditorium licking their lips at the Parisian/Spanish clash. The group was completed by Ukrainians Shakhtar Donestsk and Swedish side Malmo.
It was just written in the stars for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Potentially, his final season in European football he will have his swansong at the club where it all started. Malmo is where it began for the big man who posted a rather emotional message on via his social media channels. He said; ‘The best that could happen. I have experienced a lot during my football career and this will be one of those moments too. It’s a dream to play the Champions League in Malmo. Too bad that all of Malmo won’t fit in the stadium but I guarantee that the stadium will be heard all over Malmo. I’m on my way.’
Another return is that of Angel di Maria who will be going back to the Bernabeu where he is fondly remembered for playing a key role in them achieving La Decima – their 10th European Cup.
The lads are going to have to show their metal when it comes to the trip to Donetsk at the of next month. It is very rare for them to lose at home on European nights.
On paper, this is a tough group. But, what an exciting round of matches to look forward to!
