After a heroic display in Madrid earlier this week where only one individual mistake cost us the match, Les Parisiens take on relegation battlers Toulouse at the Parc des Prices this afternoon.
Laurent Blanc’s men suffered their first defeat of the season despite putting in their best performance so far. What the players did at the Santiago Bernabeu was absolutely incredible. They played Real off the park to put it bluntly. Better football, better chances, more passes. All the statistics were in favour of the French champions. But, in the end just one costly error by Kevin Trapp was the difference and our inability to take our chances.
You could not fault the lads! They have received deserved acclaim ever since that night. Coach Laurent Blanc as well needs to take an enormous amount of credit for his bold approach to take the game to Los Blancos. It was such a dominating performance at the home of arguably the world’s greatest football club and has reaffirmed that PSG are contenders for this season’s Champions League.
Ever since the start of the season you just sensed the belief from the players. They talked it up, the skipper Thiago Silva especially, at potentially doing something quite special in the competition this season. The signing of Angel di Maria – who was outstanding in midweek – has taken us up a level. He has come in for some criticism in parts of the French media for not producing enough for the money outlaid on him but he proved in the week that in games of that magnitude, he is on another level.
Laurent Blanc has had to put up with constant questions regarding Cristiano Ronaldo following Tuesday after the superstar was caught on camera whispering something in the Frenchman’s ear. This has caused a storm in the media with the Ballon d’Or winner apparently saying; “Your team plays great football. I would love to work with you”. LB has refused to disclose what was said but if it is true, what an incredible complement that is to the coach. The link with CR7 is getting ever stronger and with Zlatan ibrahimovic on his way next summer, QSI will want to replace him with the Portuguese.
That is a story for another day. This afternoon, it is back to domestic matters. TFC make the trip to the capital and are in free-fall. They have not won a league game since the opening day of the season and currently lie in the relegation zone, three points adrift from safety.
Adrien Rabiot, who was once on loan at Toulouse, will come back into the side after his impressive display against Real after coming on for the injured Marco Verratti. The Frenchman has been in good form when he has played this season and was desperately unlucky not to score in Madrid on a couple of occasions. His coach paid homage to him in yesterday’s pre-macth presser; “Adrien played a good match, but I’m not surprised. I’ve often said it, but he has huge potential. Against Real, he lifted his game to match the players already out on the pitch. He has the qualities to do that. Still, at Paris Saint-Germain, there are some very good midfielders. In any case, I hope that he can maintain that same frame of mind for the matches to come”.
