Paris Saint-Germain have been drawn with Chelsea in the knock-out stages of the UEFA Champions League for the third year on the trot. Both sides are tied at one apiece for qualification with Les Parisiens coming out on top last season. Thiago Silva’s equaliser in extra-time made it 3-3 on aggregate and thus sent the 10-men through to the quarterfinals.
It was a heroic display from the lads and it will go down as one of the club’s most infamous results. Especially when you consider we were down to 10-men for the majority of the game. The headline the following day from L’Equipe simply read ‘HEROIC’. And it was exactly that.
This time around we are facing Chelsea side that are the champions of England. But, their season so far has been an underwhelming one. They currently sit in 16th place, 18 points behind the leaders Arsenal. Nevertheless, you can never underestimate a Jose Mourinho side – or a Chelsea one for that matter. They proved in 2012 that despite having a poor domestic season they are still a danger in Europe. They eventually won the competition that season to lift their first European Cup.
We will be at home for the first-leg on the 16th February, with the return at Stamford Bridge on 9th March.
The last two ties between both clubs have been decided on away goals and it will be of no surprise if that as to happen again. These are evenly poised contests but it is evident that the Blues and Les Parisiens are forging quite a European rivalry.
