Paris Saint-Germain have kicked off the new year with a win thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s header against fourth-tier Wasquehal. The victory ensured our Coupe de France defence got off to the best possible start as we head into the round of 32.
The minnows were exceptional in all honesty. Despite the might of facing the Ligue 1 champions, the team in yellow posed more than a scare for Laurent Blanc and his men. They had a number of decent chances, which had they converted, then who’s to say what might have happened? We could have been talking about one of the biggest giant killings in French football history.
In the end it took the big man to bail us out on a rain sodden afternoon. There was a host of absentees as the likes of Presnel Kimpembe and Jean-Kevin Augustin started the game. Both youngsters completed the full 90 minutes, although Augustin will be left ruing a golden chance he had in the first-half which would have put us into the lead.
Nevertheless, despite the mammoth gulf in class it was anything but during the game. The hosts gave Salvatore Sirigu some nervy moments in the Parisian goal but thankfully the Italian retained his clean sheet.
The win was the most important thing for Blanc. As reported by the club’s official site, he said; “It’s never easy getting back into competition after a break and there was also some tricky conditions with the weather. We would have preferred to have scored earlier and killed the game off, but we weren’t able to do that today. We got through a lot of work last week and so we had a few heavy legs. The main thing was to qualify and we did that tonight.”
The league recommences on Friday night at home to Bastia.
